Leadership: who you are
Leadership is often good fun and deeply meaningful but it is not without its challenges.
Leadership can be lonely and even the most confident, capable and content person can feel the pressure of needing to deliver a certain level of performance or service depending on what sector we find ourselves.
Lead from WHO you are not What you can do. To be guided by your inner values, your internal compass helps us build lasting organisations that remain beyond our own involvement.
Some years ago I read of an exercise called begin with the end in mind where you essentially imagine what you would want people to say about you in your eulogy. Sounds depressing doesn’t it? It was actually very helpful because that was the starting point for me to identify values in myself that I prioritise and orient around regardless of what else is happening that I can not control.
A couple of my core values are generosity and fun. I try and apply these to all aspects of my life in a meaningful not whimsical manner. Regardless of what happens that I can not control I always have the power of choice within myself to be generous toward others and create opportunities for fun with my loved ones. I’m not always successful but if these are part of my core values they give me something to centre on.
